PIES is an acronym for Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Soulful/Spiritual
Physical. The physical pillar can be made up of anything that has a connection to the physical. Often time we associate our physical pillar with our physical goals such as working out or eating healthy.
Those are also part of our physical pillar; however, we want to also look beyond what else engages our physical pillars. Shopping can be an example of a physical pillar engagement for some as the process of shopping engages their physical pillar. Self-care such as washing our faces, showering, paining our nails, etc. can also make up our physical pillars, among others. Food and the enjoyment of food can also be a component in the engagement of our physical pillar. When we identify our pillars, it is important to keep in mind that what engages our pillars may differ from the activities and components that engage the pillars of others. We may categorize our activities differently, and at times even feel as though the activities fall under various pillars. Typically, the activities will always dominate in one pillar. For example, we know that exercise and eating healthy are great for our physical bodies, however some may categorize exercise and eating healthy as dominating in their emotional pillar. We know that food and exercise levels also have a direct impact on our moods and energy levels.
Intellectual. The intellectual pillar revolves cognitive stimuli, goals, and activation. Some examples of activities that stimulate our intellectual selves may include but are not limited to reading, a word search, certain games, career development, academia, and more. Some may identify activities such as meditation or mindfulness as an intellectual activity as they may feel intellectually stimulated by engaging their brain in an activity that helps us control our attention and even emotions. When we identify an overactive pillar such as the intellectual pillar, we may seek activities within the same pillar that support in the balance of the pillar. For instance, after a long, possibly draining day of lectures or work, we may get that feeling of wanting to “not think anymore” or possibly even express that we want to “turn off” our brains. An intellectual activity in light of feeling intellectual fatigue may be watching something that reduces the fatigue.
Emotional. The emotional pillar incorporates the development and application of emotional intelligence (EQ). We may include activities and goals that tend to our emotional selves. For instance, a goal within the emotional pillar may be to have more patience and to go on more runs to increase emotional regulation. Our emotional pillar is a combination of activities, goals, and characteristics we may want to foster and develop. Some identify the emotional pillar as the motivating factor, creating fulfillment through the acts of engaging in what we are passionate about. We may think of this pillar as the heart of our energetic centers. The emotional pillar is often made up of similar activities we may categorize as dominating in our soulful/spiritual pillars.
Soulful/Spiritual: This pillar can serve as a process of discovery through the implementation of love and activities that foster love to provide clarity and reasoning. The soulful/spiritual pillar can set the tone for our self-development as we both discover and engage in our soulful selves. The spiritual pillar may include points and activities of spiritual self-development such as prayer, bible studies, or meditation, and cleansing our spaces. There is no limit to our soulful/spiritual development. The activation of this pillar opens our abilities to connect with the source through stillness. In stillness we see clearly, and we connect with our collective and individual purposes. The implementation of activities that foster and build our soulful/spiritual selves creates higher vibrational frequencies. We can ask ourselves when discovering our spiritual pillar “what makes me vibrate higher?”
PIES is a 4/7 days a week activation. When applying PIES we want to set ourselves up for success through creating attainable goals, using consistency. Engaging in our PIES 4 out of 7 days a week creates a sense of routine, lifestyle, and engagement. How is PIES used as an Intervention Model?

PIES is an approach that uses the four energy areas that fuel our personal ecosystems. Ecosystems are communities or groups of living organisms that lie and interact with each other in a specific environment- our personal ecosystems are fuelled by the energy areas: Physical, intellectual, emotional, and soulful/spiritual. The purpose of PIES is to fuel our energy areas through actively engaging in the four dimensions of human nature. Part of what makes PIES successful is the activation of the frontal lobe, which is the activation of the reasoning, conscious brain. When we actively and consciously engage in fueling our pillars, we create consciousness of the holistic self and our surroundings. It is a powerful feeling to be conscious as we activate and engage in our PIES approach to wellness.
Through applying PIES in your lifestyle, you will open yourself to a framework that is a toolbox in its own. PIES will promote wellness, be an organizational tool for goal setting and communication, generates a holistic awareness of the self, and as a result supports with self-regulation.
Why use PIES as a Self-Regulation Tool?
PIES becomes a way of life offering continuous growth and organically becomes a structured framework to become self-aware and engage in self-growth. As we grow our awareness of the self, we gain the skills of self-reflection resulting in the capacity to self-regulate.
While PIES facilitates ongoing growth; it nonetheless acts organically as a structured guide to self reflect, and connect our consciousness with ourselves wellbeing physically, intellectually, emotionally, spiritually.
How to use PIES as a Goal Setting Tool
PIES is also an organizational tool to support us in checking in with ourselves holistically, to create goals, and to communicate. When we set goals for ourselves, we may tend to create a list of goals. Instead, we encourage you to categorize your goals under each pillar.

PIES is an organizational tool meaning it plays multiple roles in the organization of our thoughts and feelings.
When we check-in with ourselves and/or others, using a PIES framework creates holistic awareness of the self creating an opportunity to identify what pillar needs to be activated or is over activated, and in turn identify what activities will create balance.
